Expansion Joints

An Expansion Joint (movement joint) is an assembled device designed to safely absorb the heat-induced expansion and

contraction of construction materials, to withstand vibration and tortures, to hold parts together, to allow movements due to ground
settlement or seismic activities. They are commonly found between sections of buildings, bridges, sidewalks, railway tracks, piping
systems, ships, and other structures. And for sure they have to be designed to be capable of enduring the suffering of ageing.

Building faces, concrete slabs, and pipelines expand and contract due to

warming and cooling from seasonal variation, or due to other heat sources.
Before expansion joint gaps were built into these structures, they would
crack under the stress induced.
Bridge Expansion Joints

A Bridge Expansion Joint is a structural component designed to provide smooth passage over the gap between adjacent sides of

a deck joint and thus allow for continuous traffic between structures accommodating movement, concrete shrinkage or creep, elastic
shortening due to prestressing, temperature variations on reinforced and prestressed concrete, composite and steel structures. They
stop the bridge from bending out of place in extreme conditions and allow enough vertical movement to permit bearing replacement
without the need to dismantle the bridge expansion joint. There are various types, which can accommodate movement from 30 to 1000
mm or even bigger. They include joints for small movement (EMSEAL BEJS, XJS, JEP, WR, WOSd, and AC-AR), medium movement
(Etic EJ, Wd) and large movement (WP, Etic EJF/SFEJ)

As the expansion joints are installed at a late stage in construction, some of the movements have usually at least partly already taken

place. Consequently, expansion joints have to facilitate a smaller degree of overall movement than a bearing does at the same location

Expansion joints are designed as well to prevent damage to the deck, bearings, piers, and abutment by water, oil, gasoline, chemicals

and other foreign materials.

History and Norms

With over 15 years of manufacturing and marketing experiences in Expansion Joints, Datong has witnessed the booming expansion

of road&bridge built and to be built all around the country since the end of 20th century, thus becoming one the leading enterprises in
this industry. All the joints were designed and made in conformity to national norm JT/T327-2004 issued by the Ministry of Transport
and a variety of norms as references as references like European EN 1337, EN10025, EN1090, American AASHTO., as Datong has
exported to the west countries based on those standards.


Since establishment, Datong has kept herself with the national standard all the way along for the past 15 years and now it offers on an

annual basis to the UK market the BEJ Type Expansion Joint Rail which occupies close to 1/3 of the UK market. Investment in noise
reduction to improve joints performance was started since the beginning of this century, which was followed a continuous market
demand. By attaching the overhanging rhombic steel plates to the lamellas of the joint, the reduction up to 80% of the noise emissions
was achieved.

EMR Joint System with Steel Carrier Rails

The newly-introduced joint which is featured with quick installation and finishing and extreme convenience for refurbishment. It

comprises elastomeric element in metal runners (steel carrier rails), with total movement capability of up to 150mm.

The installation does not require any drilling or anchoring setting of the deck thanks to the extraordinary bond quality of the EMR resin.

A normal 2-4 hours waiting till availability of traffic is suitable depending on ambient temperatures.


Investment in introducing big-scale and sophisticated machineries to meet the market need is on increase tendency. Now Datong is

equipped with more than 110 various machines including 2.5M CNC lathes, 6M heavy planers, dozens of welders and vulcanizing
machines, which guarantee an annual output of 100,000 linear meters of expansion joints.


In addition to design and manufacture, Datong provides joints services of consultation, installation, installation guidance, remedial

works and supervision of installation by the client.
